Vessel Safety Check Program
A Vessel Safety Check is a courtesy examination of your boat (Vessel). It will verify the presence and condition of Safety Equipment required by State and Federal regulations. The Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist and is a member of US Power Squadrons or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The examiner will also make recommendations and discuss safety issues that will make you a safer boater.
This is not a boarding or law enforcement issue. No citations will be given as a result of this encounter. The examiner will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow-up on any suggestions. Vessels that pass will be able to display our distinctive Vessel Safety Check decal. This decal does not exempt you from law enforcement boarding, but you can be prepared and it will make it a positive encounter.
Together with the USCG Aux, HHSPS conducts these safety checks in the southern Beaufort County area. This effort, formerly known as the Courtesy Marine Examination, is carried out at the request of the vessel's owner or skipper. It is entirely voluntary and in no way is considered an enforcement of laws.
