Advance Education - Piloting
Spring 2007 Piloting Course
Planned for Spring, 2007
The new USPS Piloting course provides the essential skills needed to navigate in coastal and inland waters. The course is presented using GPS as your primary position sensor. However, you will also learn the skills necessary to navigate without GPS, should your electronics fail.
Practical Guide to Navigation
This course is a very practical approach to navigation for the recreation boater. It starts with a review of charts and navigation aids. It goes on to planning and plotting your course and selecting way points for the trip. After you know your intended route, the course will show you how to use your GPS to follow that route to your destination. It will also show you how to confirm your position on your chart plotter. Courses will be plotted in magnetic so that they will relate directly to your GPS and your ship's compass.
Visual aids for the new course are contained in an excellent Power Point presentation. In additon to the discussion of the visuals, there will be class exercises to reinforce the concepts being presented. Homework will consist of reading the chapter to be presented the following week and doing the homework questions from the prior weeks lesson.
Course Materials
Cost for the couse will be $45.00. In addition to the student's manual, you will receive a Maptech Chart Navigation Training CD and a copy of "The Weekend Navigator" by Bob Sweet. You will need ploting tools and a calculator. If you want to use the Maptech CD, you'll need a PC at home. But the PC is not essential for completing this course.
Great Course for Hilton Head Boaters
For those of you who have recently moved to the Hilton Head area, this course is highly recommended. Even if you've been boating in this area for some time, this is still a great course to tune up your skills. With the knowledge gained form this course, you will have more confidence boating in our tidal waters. Please note that the Seamanship course is not a prerequisite for the Piloting course. You can take Seamanship at a later date.
