Circumnavigation Cruises Numbers 3 and 4 combined Admiral K. C. Moore
Friday June 18 Bull Island and Middlemarsh Island (Hi 1250 [6.71])
The Plan : All crews will meet at Skull Creek Marina at 1000 for chart review and radio check on Channel 68 in preparation for what promises to be the best Magellan Cruise to date. We will be exploring Bull Creek, which forms the northern border of Bull Island and extends between the May River and the Cooper River, as well as exploring the back side of Middlemarsh Island.
Captains are advised to bring a means of taking soundings of up to 10-12 feet. All Captains and Magellan Society members will want to bring their charts, pen and paper (clipboards or notebooks) for note taking and to annotate their charts with locations of shoals that we locate and measure.
We will launch at 10:45. Our route will take us down Skull Creek and Calibogue Sound to the May River and up the south shore of the May River to Bull Creek. We will move along the south bank of the May, keeping 60 to 70 feet off shore and turn to port along the center line of Bull Creek, being sure not to stray too far to starboard as we enter the Creek. Virtually problem free at high tide, and almost impassable at low tide, we will be transiting Bull Creek at mid rising tide, pausing along the way at points that “Admiral” K.C. Moore knows to be the most problematic in terms of shoaling. We will probe the shoal depths at the trickiest spots, marking our charts for future reference, so that on future trips through Bull Creek, all members of the Society will know on which side of the creek to steer at every part of the journey. Exiting Bull Creek into the Cooper River opposite Daufuskie Island at lunch time, we will take a starboard turn and make our way to the Daufuskie Island Crab Company located at the old Freeport Landing Marina for a Dutch Treat lunch and discussion.
After lunch, we’ll head down the Cooper River, exit into Calibogue Sound around marker R “32” , and turn hard to port toward Middlemarsh Island. Hugging the shoreline, we’ll keep the unnumbered “marker” at the south tip of Middlemarsh to our starboard side and pass along the backside of Middlemarsh Island, noting the broad expanse of calm water, perfect for anchoring, raft ups or other leisure activities. Having completed our objectives for the day, all that awaits will be a return to our marina at whatever pace we choose.
